The family of 17-year-old Zaveon Simpkins is heartbroken after he was shot and killed in Montgomery while being robbed, just three weeks ago. Zaveon was known for his joyful spirit, playing the drums at his local church and bringing laughter to his loved ones. His mother, Lashonta Simpkins Haigler, describes the profound loss as creating a “big void” in their home and emphasizes the need for change in the community to prevent such violence from recurring.

Investigators have charged two brothers, Christopher and Christian Kelly, along with a third unnamed teen, with capital murder and robbery for the incident that claimed Zaveon’s life and left his family pleading for safer environments for their children. In a show of community solidarity, a scholarship in Zaveon’s name is being established to support other teens in achieving their goals, signifying a hopeful legacy amidst their grief.
