A federal lawsuit has been filed against the City of Lansing, Kansas, following the shooting death of a family dog by local police. The incident, captured on body camera video, shows officers shooting the dog, Axel, while it is lying injured near its owner, leading to allegations of constitutional rights violations and a demand for changes in police training.

The chilling moments leading to Axel’s death include an officer’s repeated declaration to “finish him,” after the dog had already been shot twice. The lawsuit claims that the police had the opportunity to use non-lethal methods to manage the situation, raising broader questions about law enforcement’s treatment of animals and property rights. The City of Lansing has until August 21 to respond to the allegations.
