As Colorado’s hunting season kicks off, recent wildfires—the Elk and Lee fires—have dramatically impacted big game habitats in Northwest Colorado, particularly affecting elk and mule deer ranges. These wildfires, which burned through critical areas, pose immediate challenges for wildlife and hunters as the Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) assesses changes to game dispersal and landscape accessibility.

While the Elk Fire primarily disrupted transitional winter ranges, creating potential for long-term habitat renewal, the Lee Fire affected traditional winter range, leaving wildlife managers uncertain about how animal migration patterns will adapt. With about one-fifth of Unit 22 burned, CPW is offering hunters the chance to return tags for refunds due to changing conditions; however, they also caution that the fire’s impact on wildlife will shape future hunting license allocations.
