Despite Washington’s police academy banning the Sig Sauer P320 handgun due to safety concerns about accidental discharges, several local law enforcement agencies still use the firearm. The academy imposed the ban earlier this year amid reports of the pistol firing unexpectedly, even in holsters, prompting widespread debate and backlash from police departments opposing the decision.

Moreover, while agencies are replacing these potentially dangerous weapons, they aren’t always being responsibly discarded. Instead, many of the retired firearms are sold to dealers who may reintroduce them to the public, raising concerns about public safety. This unsettling dynamic is highlighted in a report from Mother Jones and The Trace, echoing fears of a gun deemed unsafe for police officers but still available to civilians.
