Raymond Minaya, a 29-year-old gun dealer, pleads with a federal judge not to impose a longer sentence after authorities discovered a makeshift weapon in his cell at the violent Metropolitan Detention Center (MDC) Brooklyn. He argues that the high level of violence in the facility necessitated his possession of the shank, along with cell phones, to protect himself and maintain contact with family amid frequent lockdowns.

Federal prosecutors counter Minaya’s claims, emphasizing his history of violence and rule-breaking in prior incarcerations. They assert that he cannot justify his possession of contraband by simultaneously contributing to the dangerous conditions within MDC Brooklyn. Notably, Minaya sold over 50 firearms to an undercover agent, including weapons linked to a mass shooting, raising serious concerns about public safety and accountability.
