Springfield Armory launched its 1911 DS Prodigy line in 2022, following the 2011-style handgun footprint first established by STI. While a more compact 4.25”-barreled gun was available at launch, these guns had full-size grip frames made from a combination of polymer and steel, and both accepted the 17- and 20-round magazines commonly used on competition-style 2011 pistols. It wasn’t until 2025 that Springfield added a truly compact, carry-friendly variant to its Prodigy lineup. Dimensionally, the Springfield Prodigy Compact 3.5” is smaller in both height and length compared to its siblings. The 3.5” barrel takes the overall length down to 7″, which is nearly a full inch shorter than the next largest Prodigy. The grip frame has also been shortened by nearly half an inch and has been redesigned around a flush-fit, 15-round magazine instead of the 17-round magazine used on the full-size originals.
One of the biggest changes on the Prodigy Compact is one you can’t really see, but you sure can feel it. Instead of using steel at the core of the grip frame, Springfield elected to use 7075 aluminum instead, taking the weight down from 33 ozs. to just over 25 ozs. That’s not much more than many duty-size, polymer-frame pistols out there.
At the top end of the gun, there’s a milled slot protected by an included cover plate that incorporates a ledge-style rear sight set into a dovetail. This milled section accommodates Springfield’s Agency Optic System, which offers a range of adapter plates for many of today’s red-dot sights. Each adapter plate includes a rear sight that sits behind the optic, allowing owners to co-witness their dots with the tritium-illuminated front sight.
Despite the size- and weight-savings built into the Prodigy Compact, there’s one dimension where it’s still pretty chunky: width. At almost 1.5” wide, there’s a lot to hang onto here, giving us a solid foundation during our range day. The fine stippling on the polymer portion of the grip frame anchored the gun well, and we appreciated the crisp break of the curved trigger shoe, which also shortened up the length of pull a bit to make up for the extra material in the grip frame. For fans of the M1911 who are looking to up their carry capacity, the Prodigy Compact combines modern materials with a classic control layout for a truly capable and carry-ready platform.
