When it comes to engineering modern handguns, few companies have the resume of Walther Arms. The German brand has been a steadfast designer since the late 19th century and it continues to turn out successful new blueprints by the decade. And as time seems to advance with Walther, so have its practices, and it has become a known source for performance-driven guns with focus on function and ergonomics.

Its latest accomplishment, the Performance Duty Pistol series, came as a groundbreaking new product for Walther beginning in about 2020 and has gone on to see several line extensions since. One example featuring an optic-ready slide, enhanced ergonomics and built-in barrel compensator, the Pro-X PMM, was featured in the September 2025 American Rifleman magazine. Watch our video above to see the Pro-X PMM in use on the range.

How exactly does a 100-plus-year-old maker continue to reinvent the wheel you ask? We ask the same thing, too, and Walther is demonstrated it, again, with the successful rollout of another feature-rich Performance Duty Pistol. The PDP Pro-X PMM we have here on the range is made for 9 mm Luger ammo and is meant for hard use every day, which becomes increasingly more apparent the deeper you look into it. The Pro-X PMM is a full-size, optic-ready pistol built on a polymer frame. But that’s just the surface of it.

Actually, it’s black nitride. This finish is tough! And then you have the machined-steel slide with all its contours and serious serrations; Walther calls these sections fore and aft SuperTerrain Serrations. And it flat-out works! The black polymer frame comes teeming with well-thought elements to better the experience, too. PDP texturing glues to the hand and the grip frame’s contours meld great when the heat is on and having modularity in the backstrap allows for a custom-like fit. Performance upgrades like the lip at the bottom of the magazine well for smooth loading along with smartly contrived frame contours and bilateral controls come together for peak efficiency, whether that’s needed on the shooting line, in the cruiser or bedside safe.

The Pro-X PMM is also well-suited for fine accuracy. This is mostly due to the adjustable rear sight and a 4.63” high-quality barrel with a built-in compensator for taming recoil. All that can be coupled with an electronic optic for even higher precision on target. Squeeze in the fact Walther supplies 18-round magazines with the Pro-X PMM and you’ve got a range day in the making.

So how does it perform on the range? Well, Walther’s Dynamic Performance Trigger, at just over 5 lbs. of pull, is smooth and crisp and was a lot of fun to pull. It should also be noted our testers were able to produce 1.7” groups at 25 yards, which is no easy task. A five-slot Picatinny rail on a nice long rail obviously gives the frame a bit more support while the compensator allows the shooter to respond smoother to shots fired, but it’s the sum of all that get the job done perfectly. And for that, Walther’s PDP Pro-X PMM is one tough contender in a rough and dangerous world.
