Hamilton College releases a comprehensive study aimed at combating youth gun violence in Utica, New York, following over a year of research and collaboration with various institutions. The report, produced by the Justice Lab at the college’s Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center and involving 16 students, highlights critical themes like social and economic influences, policy responses, and psychological development.

Among the pivotal recommendations are initiatives to enhance community policing strategies and provide employment opportunities for at-risk youth. The study also emphasizes the need for systematic community support and the establishment of permanent School Resource Officers, addressing critical areas that contribute to youth involvement in gun violence. Mayor Michael Galime supports the report, expressing confidence that its findings could significantly impact the city’s approach to this pressing issue.
