Deputies from the Oxford and Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Offices fatally shot a 51-year-old man in Hartford after he allegedly assaulted an elderly relative. The incident occurred Saturday evening when law enforcement responded to a call at 299 Tucker Road, where an 80-year-old man reported being attacked by his stepson, Eric Newell. Despite attempts to deescalate the situation, Newell emerged from the residence brandishing a knife, leading to deputies firing at him when he did not comply with commands.

Newell succumbed to his injuries on the scene, prompting both involved deputies to be placed on administrative leave as per standard protocol following the use of deadly force. An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the Office of the Maine Attorney General, raising significant community concerns about the interactions between law enforcement and individuals in crisis situations.
