The Dorchester County Coroner’s Office has identified 42-year-old Richard Williams as the man who was fatally shot during an attempted home invasion in Summerville early on May 7. Deputies responded to the scene on Hope Drive shortly after 1 a.m. and discovered Williams dead after he reportedly attempted to forcefully enter the residence.

According to Steven Wright, a spokesperson for the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, no charges have been filed in connection with the incident, as South Carolina’s castle doctrine allows homeowners to defend themselves without fear of prosecution. This case raises critical questions about self-defense laws in the state, especially as details emerge surrounding the circumstances of the shooting.
