Iowa Turkey Hunters Aim for Record Take Again

The wild turkey hunting season kicks off in Iowa today with the youth season, as hunters aim to replicate last year’s impressive record of 16,000 birds harvested. Iowa DNR wildlife biologist Jim Coffey notes that a strong population of two-year-old birds is expected to attract hunters this year, despite a slight dip in production in 2024.

Coffey explains that the mating season influences turkey movement, making younger males more vulnerable. Additionally, he warns that early spring foliage could complicate visibility for hunters. With only 22% to 25% of hunters typically successful during the season, Coffey emphasizes the importance of preparation and safety while in pursuit of these elusive birds.
