Jack O’Connor was a prolific writer widely acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost hunting experts. His firearm knowledge was undeniable and the success of the .270 Win. cartridge is partly—perhaps largely—due to his passion for the cartridge that was often reflected in his stories.

He was on the staff at Outdoor Life for more than three decades and penned 15 books. An apparent heart attack, while on board a ship returning to San Francisco from Hawaii, claimed his life on Jan. 20, 1978. It didn’t end the long string of stories written by an O’Connor, however.

His son, Bradford, who grew up hunting and shooting with his father, also shared that wealth of knowledge in print. Today, he is also acknowledged as an expert in the industry and is credited with many feature stories and books.

Bradford O’Connor is now 93, an age when it’s time to part with some of the art, books and firearms from his father’s estate and his private collection. They are up for auction on GunBroker.com and gun owners, hunters and enthusiasts are already bidding.

Full details and the list of items are found here. There are 28 items being offered so far and all auctions end on Jan. 18, 2026.

Those looking to add timeless elegance to their library won’t be disappointed. Books written by both O’Connors, some with inscriptions, rare editions, collections and more are offered. There’s also collectable artwork.

Nine firearms are up for bid, too. They include Jack O’Connor’s Fracassi engraved Beretta S3 EL 12 shotgun, with case. There’s also Jack O’Connor’s Remington 513-S Matchmaster .22 LR, which was later gifted to Bradford.

The auction wouldn’t be complete without something chambered in .270 Win. That slot is filled by Bradford O’Connor’s personal Winchester Model 70 Jack O’Connor Custom Tribute rifle.

All items will be shipped from Kalispell, Mont.
