Illinois officially enacts Karina’s Law, aimed at reducing domestic violence deaths involving firearms, in response to tragic incidents including the murders of Karina Gonzalez and her daughter, Daniela Alvarez. Signed by Governor JB Pritzker, the law outlines a clear process for law enforcement to remove firearms from alleged abusers within 96 hours of a court order, a measure prompted by alarming statistics indicating that firearms were responsible for 68% of domestic violence homicides in the state in 2023.

Manny Alvarez, Gonzalez’s son, champions the legislation as a crucial step toward protecting victims, sharing that, after receiving an order of protection, his family faced fatal consequences just days later. Advocates believe that while the law is designed to save lives, it also raises constitutional concerns regarding due process for accused individuals, sparking debate among lawmakers and legal experts alike. The measure takes effect on Mother’s Day, symbolizing a poignant legacy of love and loss aimed at fostering safety for vulnerable families.
