In response to the deadly shooting at a Minneapolis Catholic school, Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith took to the Senate floor to advocate for significant gun reform measures. The tragic event claimed the lives of two children, Fletcher Merkel (8) and Harper Moyski (10), while injuring 21 others, predominantly youngsters, during a school mass when a shooter unleashed nearly 120 rounds through stained-glass windows.
Klobuchar emphasized the need for lawmakers to act decisively, urging the closure of “dangerous loopholes” that allow firearms to fall into the hands of those unfit to possess them. She proposed banning ghost guns, bump stocks, and high-capacity magazines, along with restoring funding for the ATF to enhance enforcement of existing gun laws. “If we just took these common-sense measures,” Klobuchar states, “we would make a difference,” highlighting the urgent call for reform in the face of mounting gun violence across the country.
