In a troubling weekend for Lansing, four individuals were shot, including a 15-year-old girl, prompting renewed community calls for action against gun violence. With Lansing Police reporting 26 non-fatal and 5 fatal shootings this year alone, officials have seized nearly 250 illegal firearms in the first six months, emphasizing the critical need for proactive strategies to combat this growing issue.

Community leaders, like Michael Lynn Junior of the Lansing Empowerment Network, stress the importance of local involvement in tackling the problem. “We have to take ownership of this problem,” Lynn states, urging residents to engage in constructive activities beyond social media. Police Chief Rob Backus highlights that most shootings are linked to illegal firearms, many belonging to legal owners whose guns have been stolen, underscoring a community responsibility to secure weapons.
