On April 18, local veterans in Honolulu, Capt. Chris Marvin and Chris Thomas, spearhead a call for an assault weapons ban at a demonstration at Koko Head Shooting Complex. They stress the urgency of regulating assault weapons, pointing to other states where similar laws have successfully decreased gun violence and emphasizing that proactive measures are essential to prevent tragedies.

Hawaii lawmakers are currently reviewing Senate Bill 401, which seeks to broaden the existing ban on assault pistols to include specific rifles and shotguns, along with prohibiting standard capacity magazines. This legislation has already gained bipartisan support in the House, indicating a growing consensus on the need to address the dangers presented by these firearms in civilian hands.
