Maui County Sees Low Concealed Handgun Permit Rates

A recent report from the Hawaiʻi Department of the Attorney General reveals that Maui County residents hold a minimal share of the state’s concealed handgun permits, accounting for just 0.2% of the adult population aged 20 and older. In 2024, a total of 2,207 individuals statewide were licensed to carry concealed firearms, with Maui County significantly underrepresented compared to other regions like Kauaʻi County, which holds 11% of the licenses despite only comprising 5.1% of the state’s population.

The report highlights the reasons behind license denials and revocations, with only 16 out of 119 rejections related to legal disqualifications. It also notes concerns about safe firearm handling, as exemplified by a recent license revocation in Maui stemming from an incident involving a mishandled weapon. As the Attorney General’s Office commits to annual updates, more detailed statistics on concealed carry trends across Hawaii are expected in the future.
