A patrol of 18 armed Mexican soldiers allegedly crossed into U.S. territory, surrounding two Americans who were exploring a remote trail in southern New Mexico. Abbey Carpenter and James Holeman, volunteers with a group searching for lost migrants, documented the encounter and used a GPS app to inform the soldiers they were on U.S. soil, prompting the soldiers to turn back. The incident raises concerns about border security and the dynamics of military presence near the U.S.-Mexico border.

The soldiers claimed to be searching for drug traffickers and gunrunners, which the American pair found alarming given the circumstances. This stretch of border, marked by only a simple wire fence, lacks substantial barriers seen elsewhere, making such incidents more likely. With increased military presence from the Mexican National Guard, the implications of such crossings warrant further investigation.
