This decision stems from recent findings that indicate the previous ban has not led to measurable improvements in the region’s deer population, which has struggled after harsh winters in 2013-2015.
The regulation update, approved by the Natural Resources Commission, aims to balance the male-to-female deer ratio, addressing concerns raised by the Upper Peninsula Deer Advisor Team. With the new amendment, hunters can use various licenses to harvest antlerless deer from October 1 to January 1, giving wildlife managers an additional tool to sustainably manage deer populations in this critical area.
