In a significant shift, Minnesota now permits individuals aged 18 to 20 to apply for a gun-carry permit following a ruling by the Eighth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to intervene. The change, which comes after nearly four years of legal challenges by gun rights advocates, was officially communicated to certified firearms trainers and sheriff’s offices by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension this week.

Advocates celebrate this ruling as a victory for constitutional rights, claiming that the previous age limit of 21 infringed on the rights of legal adults. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed disappointment in the outcome, emphasizing that the state will continue its efforts to regulate gun violence.
