Diane Lewis, mother of Isaiah, who was killed in an accidental shooting in 2008, is passionately advocating for safe gun storage to prevent similar tragedies. Her son, just seven years old, accessed an unsecured firearm at his uncle’s house, resulting in his untimely death. This heartbreaking loss drives Lewis to speak out, emphasizing the importance of securing firearms to protect children. “Seconds, it took seconds literally and it changed my life,” she says, underscoring that safety measures can prevent future incidents.

In collaboration with the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Lewis is part of a movement that encourages parents to inquire about gun safety before allowing their children to visit homes with firearms. Dr. Chris Peltier emphasizes that pediatricians are now trained to discuss firearm storage with families during children’s well visits, framing it as a critical public health issue. Lewis shares her story not just to raise awareness but to ensure no other parent experiences the profound grief she endures daily. “The should’ve, could’ve, would’ves are forever,” she reflects.
