The North Carolina Department of Public Safety holds an NC S.A.F.E. event to stress the significance of securely storing firearms, particularly after 86 incidents last year where children accessed guns at schools. The tragic story of Jenesis Dockery, an eight-year-old accidentally shot at a babysitter’s house, serves as a heartrending reminder of the consequences of unsafe gun practices, prompting her family to advocate for better storage solutions.

At the event hosted at Garner Magnet High School, officials emphasize the shared responsibility of gun ownership and the critical steps parents must take to ensure their firearms do not fall into the wrong hands. With over 14 juveniles charged with firearm-related offenses in 2024 alone, the message is clear: proper gun storage can save lives and prevent preventable tragedies.
