In the wake of a mass shooting in Manhattan, investigators are examining how the alleged gunman, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura from Las Vegas, was able to obtain firearms, particularly an M4-style semiautomatic rifle. Although he legally purchased a .357 caliber revolver and holds a concealed weapon permit from Nevada, the exact means by which he acquired the rifle remain unclear, highlighting potential loopholes in state and federal firearm regulations.

Since the 2017 Las Vegas shooting tragedy, Nevada has made strides in gun control, including a ban on ghost guns and a law mandating background checks for private sales. However, with Nevada scoring a B- in a recent report card on gun laws, experts point out that the state’s open carry policy and exceptions for assault weapons may still leave gaps that could endanger public safety. As investigations continue, this incident raises critical discussions about effectiveness and enforcement of existing laws.
