U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin, along with over 80 co-sponsors, introduce the Equal Access to Justice for Victims of Gun Violence Act. This bicameral bill seeks to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act, enacted in 2005, which provides the gun industry with a legal liability shield against lawsuits for negligence. The senators argue that this legislation will enable victims of gun violence to seek justice and hold irresponsible gun manufacturers accountable.

As they highlight the ongoing epidemic of gun violence in America, Duckworth emphasizes the importance of finally allowing courts to hear cases against negligent gun sellers and manufacturers. The bill has garnered support from prominent organizations like Brady, Everytown for Gun Safety, and March for Our Lives, underscoring a growing movement for accountability in the gun industry. If passed, the legislation would align the gun industry with other sectors, allowing civil lawsuits to proceed where they previously could not due to legal protections.
