In a comprehensive new report, the Center for American Progress explores the shifting focus of gun regulation 20 years after the federal assault weapons ban. While discussions have largely pivoted towards preventing dangerous individuals from accessing firearms, the report also evaluates longstanding policies surrounding the classification of assault rifles and other firearms in light of contemporary gun violence data.

Particularly, the report offers a fresh framework for regulating assault weapons while balancing public safety and the rights of responsible gun owners. Notably, it advocates for measures such as requiring background checks for all gun sales and mandating permits for assault weapon possession, highlighting a significant gap in current legislation nearly a decade after the original ban lapsed.
