New York state officials are advancing legislation to criminalize the sharing of digital blueprints used to manufacture components that convert semi-automatic firearms into machine guns. This measure, announced by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, aims to counteract the growing threat posed by 3D-printed firearms, which can be produced at home and evade traditional gun regulations.

The bill seeks to punish those caught distributing these digital files with up to a year in prison, reflecting the urgency to address a loophole in gun laws as the number of recovered machine-gun conversion devices increases. Notably, 53 such devices were recovered in New York in 2023, compared to a staggering 5,816 nationwide, highlighting a critical trend in firearm accessibility and potential for increased violence.
