The National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) reports a 3.4% year-over-year decline in adjusted National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks for April 2025, with totals reaching 1,174,290. This marks a continuation of a downward trend noted since October 2024, with April being the 69th consecutive month to record over one million sales-related background checks, highlighting the persistent interest in firearm purchases among Americans.
In addition to the overall decline, Texas, Florida, California, Pennsylvania, and Colorado lead the nation in both adjusted NICS and FBI NICS handgun checks. Notably, the unadjusted FBI NICS figure for April 2025 decreased by 2.1% compared to the previous year, standing at 2,194,006. The NSSF’s insights underscore the enduring commitment many Americans have to exercising their Second Amendment rights, despite fluctuations in background checks.
