NM Supreme Court Upholds Gun Ban in Albuquerque Parks

The New Mexico Supreme Court rules in favor of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham’s temporary gun ban in Albuquerque’s parks and playgrounds, citing public health concerns amid escalating gun violence. The ruling comes as a response to the governor’s declaration of emergency measures in September 2023, aimed at reducing gun-related incidents in the metro area.

While the initial restrictions included all public spaces, they were later narrowed following a federal court intervention. In a split decision, the justices dismissed arguments from Republican lawmakers and gun rights advocates that the order oversteps the legislature’s role, stating that similar public health issues could arise in the future and warrant preemptive measures.
