No Charges for Officers in Allen County Shootings

The Allen County Prosecutor’s Office concludes that officers involved in three fatal police-action shootings in 2024 will not face criminal charges. This decision follows an investigation into the incidents, where officers were found to have acted within their rights to use lethal force, believing it necessary to protect themselves and the community.

Among the incidents, the shooting of 31-year-old Gawon Benson was notably classified as a “suicide by cop scenario,” raising complex discussions around mental health and police encounters. With a total of seven police-action deaths recorded in the county last year, the findings prompt renewed attention on law enforcement protocols in critical situations, as well as calls from families for transparency and public release of body camera footage in these cases.
