NOPD Officer Suspended After Gun Linked to Armed Robbery

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has suspended Officer Derrick Williams for two days after he left his service weapon in an unlocked vehicle, which was later connected to a fatal armed robbery. In June 2022, Williams reported his Glock stolen from the trunk of his car, mistakenly assuming it was locked, and investigators have since linked the firearm to a December 2024 incident where two suspects used it during a robbery at a local meat market.

NOPD Assistant Superintendent Hans Ganthier confirmed the suspension, citing violations of departmental firearm storage policy, which mandates that all issued firearms should be securely stored at all times. The operational oversight has significant implications, as the stolen weapon was involved in a crime that resulted in the death of one of the suspects, raising urgent questions about gun security among law enforcement personnel.
