Following two police-involved shootings that injured a 37-year-old woman and a 38-year-old man, Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi expresses grave concerns over cuts to mental health and gun safety programs. Both incidents occurred when the suspects allegedly ignored police orders to drop their firearms, with Fatehi noting that many individuals shot by police often fall into the categories of armed individuals evading arrest or mentally ill persons in possession of guns.

Fatehi emphasizes that funding cuts proposed by the Trump administration threaten to exacerbate the existing mental health crisis in the U.S., warning that jails often serve as de facto mental health facilities. He calls for urgent action from local and federal officials to ensure adequate support for mental health initiatives to prevent future violence, stating, “We can’t afford to stand silent.” The Norfolk prosecutor’s standpoint invites critical dialogue on the intersection of mental health, gun ownership, and public safety.
