NYC Shootings Surge Over 50% Amid Rising Temperatures

Gun violence in New York City experiences a dramatic increase, with a reported 23 shootings last week, marking a 53% rise compared to the same period last year. The warmer weather, including temperatures reaching 82 degrees, appears to correlate with the surge in shootings and raises concerns about a potentially violent summer ahead.

Among the victims is 61-year-old Excenia Mette, a grandmother caught in the crossfire, and 28-year-old Daoud Marji, who was shot while visiting friends in the Bronx. The NYPD also notes a troubling trend of decreased gun arrests during this period, which could further complicate efforts to reduce violence as the city strives to maintain an overall decline in shootings year-to-date.
