A police officer in Monroe, North Carolina, is in stable condition after being shot multiple times by a suspect armed with a rifle in the early hours of Saturday morning. The incident began with a chase that ended when officers deployed stop sticks, prompting the suspect to open fire, hitting the officer.
The suspect, identified as 18-year-old Joshua Hayden Sikes, fled into nearby woods, leading to an extensive manhunt with drones and a helicopter. When Sikes fired upon officers during the confrontation, they returned fire, fatally wounding him. Monroe Police Chief Rhett Bolen noted that the suspect intended to kill, highlighting the officers’ decisive actions that ultimately saved the officer’s life. The State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the inquiry into the shooting.
