Permit-to-Purchase Law Could Reduce Gun Deaths in WA

A permit-to-purchase law in Washington State, House Bill 1163, is poised for the governor’s signature and could significantly reduce gun fatalities. According to recent estimates, if this law were in place since 2015, the state might have prevented nearly 250 homicides and close to 1,000 gun-related suicides, reflecting a growing call for enhanced firearm safety regulations.

The proposed legislation requires prospective gun buyers to undergo training and obtain a permit before making a purchase, a step supported by over 72 percent of Americans, including 62 percent of gun owners. Advocates argue that increased training and rigorous background checks could help keep firearms out of the hands of individuals who pose risks to themselves and others, highlighting the urgent need for legislative action as gun deaths continue to rise across the state.
