Rochester Gun Violence Drops 34%, Still Above Pre-COVID Levels

Rochester government officials report a significant 34% decrease in gun violence, with the city recording 164 shooting incidents with injuries in 2024, down from 247 in 2023. Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted this progress during her visit on Monday, emphasizing the ongoing need for public safety measures amid economic challenges.

However, Hochul acknowledged that gun violence remains 16% higher than in the years before the pandemic, which saw a dramatic spike in incidents, peaking at 350 injuries from shootings in 2021. Local business owners, like Sam Lentine of Flower City Produce Inc., express concerns that despite recent improvements, crime rates continue to affect their livelihoods, indicating a pressing need for further action and community support.
