Rocky Mount, North Carolina, seeks to address rising gun violence through community initiatives, kicking off with the “Summer Night Lights Series” that brings together residents for food, games, and music. Recent tragic incidents, including the shooting of Jaime De La Fuente, the father of a police officer, highlight the urgency of these efforts, underscoring the need for safe spaces that foster connection among neighbors.

In response to the growing violence—which left two people dead near MLK Park this month alone—local leaders are organizing discussions and events to promote crime prevention. Community members believe solutions are attainable, especially with a $300,000 grant from the Governor’s Crime Commission. Upcoming gatherings include a meeting by North Carolinians Against Gun Violence this Sunday and the National Night Out event on August 5, creating opportunities for dialogue and solidarity in the fight against gun-related incidents.
