San Diego County reports a notable 22 percent decrease in firearm-related homicides since 2020, alongside a 19 percent drop in firearm suicides compared to the previous year, according to a recent study. This reduction comes as part of efforts targeting ghost guns, which have seen a remarkable 39 percent decline in recoveries, highlighting the city’s intensified crackdown on untraceable firearms.

Local officials, including Terra Lawson-Remer, emphasize the effectiveness of new regulations that have led to over 2,600 firearms being voluntarily surrendered at safety events. With the San Diego County Sheriff’s Office filing 368 criminal charges related to ghost gun violations this year alone, the report underscores the necessity for continued focus on communities most affected by firearm violence to foster enduring preventive strategies.
