The U.S. Supreme Court is poised to hear a significant case regarding the Second Amendment, specifically the New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Corlett. The litigation challenges New York’s requirement that individuals demonstrate “proper cause” to obtain a concealed carry license, a term that lacks precise definition in state law and excludes self-defense as a valid justification.

This marks the first major Supreme Court consideration of Second Amendment rights in over a decade, following landmark decisions in Heller and McDonald. Should the Court side with the plaintiffs, it could expand gun rights to include public carrying, a critical interpretation of the Second Amendment that may reshape gun control laws nationwide.
