A community initiative in South Philadelphia, titled “Wake Up, Rise Up, Live for Peace,” gathers families affected by gun violence to promote awareness and healing. Founded by Douglas Payne, a retired teacher who has also lost students to gun violence, the initiative brings together musicians and athletes to amplify their message. Many participants, like Dr. Roxanne Contee, who lost her son in 2021, emphasize the urgency of their fight, as lives are cut short at alarming young ages—some as young as 12. The initiative serves as a beacon of hope and resilience for families determined to seek change.
