A handgun stolen from a vehicle at Gold’s Gym in East Memphis has been linked to a homicide that occurred in Hickory Hill over the weekend. Memphis police report that the firearm, taken during a series of break-ins in June 2024, was found in the vehicle of a suspect following the deadly shooting outside an apartment complex, where evidence included a blood trail and shell casings.

The incident highlights a troubling trend in Memphis, where gun thefts from vehicles have surged, with nearly 2,900 firearms stolen last year alone. As police emphasize the importance of securing firearms, local statistics reveal that more than half of these stolen guns are from vehicles—compounding concerns about their use in violent crimes. The recent arrest of 44-year-old Raffael Newman, who admitted to the shooting, further intensifies scrutiny on this ongoing issue.
