Texas Residents Charged in $22M Illegal Gambling Scheme

More than a dozen residents of the Houston area have been charged for their role in an alleged illegal gambling scheme that generated over $22 million. Among those indicted is Nizar Ali, 61, who allegedly conspired to operate illegal game rooms while also attempting to bribe law enforcement to protect these establishments from scrutiny, facing up to ten years for each bribery count if convicted.

As part of “Operation Double Down,” federal authorities executed a large-scale crackdown, deploying over 700 law enforcement officers to serve numerous search warrants. The operation led to the seizure of more than $16 million in cash, property, and even luxury items such as 100 Rolex watches and eight firearms, reflecting the extensive scale of the operation.
