A 35-year-old suspect has been arrested and charged after being shot by an armed citizen in Cary, N.C. after what police are calling an “unprovoked attack.”

Authorities told reporters that, just after 6 a.m. on January 30, the suspect approached a man at an Exxon gas station and allegedly poured gasoline over the man before hitting the victim with his car. The suspect was armed and shot the 35-year-old in the chest once in what police described as “an act of self-defense.”

The suspect was hospitalized for several days to treat the gunshot wound before being arrested. He currently faces two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. The suspect told a judge that the incident was a “misunderstanding” and that he planned to fight the charges. He is noted as having a prior criminal record, with a handful of convictions and pending charges, including DWI, drug charges and fleeing from officers. The victim is not facing any charges. Staying late in his Chicago store one night, George Perez watched as five men smashed a window and entered the shop.

The store owner drew his registered handgun and ordered the men to leave, but instead, they advanced menacingly. Perez then fired and chased them off.

One would-be burglar still clutching stolen goods was found dead outside. Police said Perez acted in self-defense. (The Sun-Times, Chicago, Ill.)
