A resident of an apartment in Las Cruces, N.M., was forced to defend himself from a knife-wielding intruder late in the evening on July 31, according to a Las Cruces Police Department investigation.
At 11:15 p.m., officers were dispatched to a local apartment block with the report that a man had been shot. A subsequent investigation revealed that the 44-year-old man had been shot while allegedly attempting to force his way into one of the apartments while armed with a knife. The 24-year-old resident of the apartment armed himself with a handgun and fired, striking the attempted burglar at least once in the chest.
The 44-year-old suspect was transported to an area hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. (Las Cruces Sun News; Las Cruces, N.M.; 8/2/24)

After being shot six times, a Washington, D.C. part-time gas station attendant routed two hold-up men and held a third at bay until police arrived. Jumped by the armed trio in front of the station, Edward O. King, 24, drew a .32-cal. revolver and traded shot for shot with the thugs. Two fled. Though badly wounded, King kept the third man cowering in a phone booth with an occasional shot in his direction. The latter was charged with assault with intent to kill. (Washington Evening Star)
