An armed mother defended herself and her baby from a home invader in Joliet, Ill., according to police.
Officers responded to a report of a home invasion around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, August 15. An investigation revealed that the woman heard the noise of someone breaking into her house. She grabbed her baby and ran to the second floor of the home, where they both hid inside of a bedroom closet. The suspect entered the bedroom, and the woman opened fire, the bullet striking the intruder in the head.
When police arrived, they found the woman and child had retreated to the adjacent bedroom after the shooting. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene and was found to be wearing gloves and wielding a screwdriver. The woman confirmed that she did not know the man. (ABC 7 Chicago; Joliet; Ill.; 8/16/25)

When Mrs. Lilly Mahone began hearing noises outside her window in an Atlanta, Ga. apartment complex, she started carrying her .38-cal. pistol to bed. One night, she was awakened by the sound of her kitchen window breaking. Rising from bed, the 77-year-old woman confronted a burglar.
“What are you doing in my house?” she demanded. When the man made a sudden move, she shot him down and held him captive until police arrived . (The Constitution, Atlanta, Ga.)
