An alleged intruder armed with a rock and a wooden stake met an armed resident in Oceanside, Calif., and was killed after a confrontation inside the home’s bedroom.
At about 7:30 p.m. on July 29, police responded to reports of an assault. An investigation revealed that the intruder had attempted to break into the house through an open sliding door at the rear of the residence. The open door provided access to the home’s bedroom, and a woman was inside the bedroom at the time of the incident. A man inside the house confronted the intruder, who then threw a rock into his face.
The resident armed himself with a gun and shot the intruder three times, hitting him in the chest with at least one shot. Police arrived at the scene minutes later and attempted to render aid to the suspect, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. In a news release, the Oceanside Police Department said the suspect may have broken into another home in the area by throwing a rock through a sliding glass window, but the investigation was still ongoing. Ed Osborne heard a shot in his Ukiah, Calif., tavern and rushed in to find a holdup man with a sawed-off shotgun standing over his bartender. Osborne, believing the bartender dead, shot the bandit fatally. Later, it developed that the bandit had merely clubbed the bartender with his sawed-off gun, causing it to fire accidentally. A coroner’s jury ruled the bandit-shooting a justifiable homicide. (Sacramento Bee)
