What police called an “ongoing dispute” escalated in a Winston-Salem, N.C., neighborhood on Saturday, August 9, when one of the men involved aggressively confronted another homeowner, resulting in what the local district attorney deemed a case of self-defense.

Officers say the ongoing argument between the two men erupted into violence when one of the local residents, a 54-year-old man, who was armed with a gun, approached the other man’s home in a “threatening manner.” The other homeowner, fearful for his life, had armed himself and opened fire, hitting the 54-year-old suspect. When police were called to the scene at 10:17 a.m., they found the wounded suspect and transported him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.

The Winston-Salem Police Dept. consulted with the Forsyth County district attorney and determined that the situation was justifiable self-defense, so no charged will be filed against the homeowner who opened fire. (FOX 8 News; Winston-Salem, N.C.; 8/12/25)

When the doorbell rang at Doug Ferdig’s Aurora, Colo., home, he thought it was just a salesman. But when he looked out the window, he saw a man walking around the side of the house. Ferdig armed himself with a pistol and then dialed 911. As he talked to the dispatcher, he heard noises coming from upstairs.

The 41-year-old mailman rushed up and confronted the intruder as he came out of the master bedroom where his wife was sleeping. When the man did not stop, Ferdig fired, wounding the intruder—a man whose police record included several arrests for burglary and related charges. (The Denver Post, Denver, Colo.)
