This holiday season, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) warns that burglars are primarily hunting for firearms instead of traditional gifts in crowded parking lots. A recent study reveals that nearly 2,500 guns are stolen from vehicles each year in the city, emphasizing the need for heightened awareness during peak shopping times.
Officers from a specialized Holiday Task Force patrol shopping areas to prevent these thefts. Surprisingly, around 25% of the firearm thefts occur at hotel parking lots, often due to owners not wanting to leave guns unsecured in rooms. With a significant number of thefts concentrated in parking lots around shopping centers, experts say that simply not leaving firearms in vehicles is the most effective prevention measure.
