Accidental shootings from unsecured firearms rank among the leading causes of unintentional deaths for children and teens, a concern underscored by a recent CDC study. In light of recent tragic events, including a child shooting incident near a daycare, crime and safety analyst Tom Hackney emphasizes the responsibility gun owners have to secure their firearms, particularly in homes with young children.

Hackney recommends proactive measures such as having open conversations about gun safety and ensuring that firearms are locked away from easily accessible areas. He highlights that even secure homes cannot guarantee safety if children visit other locations, making education about firearm safety crucial. The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office offers free gun locks to aid in these protective measures, inviting community engagement as summer approaches and the risk of incidents increases.
