Toledo City Council is set to vote on a comprehensive five-year anti-violence proposal known as the Peace in Motion plan, aimed at addressing gun violence in the community. Proposed by the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement, the initiative emphasizes diversion classes, youth leadership programs, and enhanced community investment as critical strategies to disrupt violence and uplift affected neighborhoods.

Key aspects of the plan focus on supporting families affected by gun violence with a proposed $2,000 stipend to cover expenses for victims’ families. The initiative also addresses the root causes of violence, including poverty, by tackling issues like median household income and job creation. As Council Member George Sarantou highlights, the data-driven approach aims to provide targeted resources to the neighborhoods disproportionately impacted by violence, particularly among Black individuals, encouraging a proactive response to public safety challenges.
