A reported sighting of an armed individual on UMass Lowell’s South Campus led to a campus-wide shelter-in-place order on the first day of the fall semester. The lockdown, issued shortly after 2:30 p.m., was lifted by 5:15 p.m. as police confirmed the suspect was no longer believed to be in the area following a comprehensive search involving nearly 100 officers, drones, and K-9 units.
Despite the warning of a potential gunman, authorities stated there was no evidence of shots fired during the incident. In response to the threat, UMass Lowell implemented emergency alerts throughout the situation, and although classes will resume as scheduled, police continue to investigate the initial report and have encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
